In this article, I am going to write a summary of the book named "Unlimited Memory." It is a memory training book by Kevin Horsley. As his website states, he is a World Memory Championship medalist and a two-time World Record holder for The Everest of memory tests.
In one of the TEDx talks, he asks the audience to give him a silence of 20 seconds to remember a set of numbers and recalls it in sequential and reversed order.
The book talks about techniques to train your memory to remember and recall the information you have gathered. Before taking us into the actual action steps, Kevin guides us to get rid of all the negative thoughts about memory and remembrance. He asks us to believe that we have a great memory that can lead us to a great life.
Now, let us move ahead with the action plan.
- Concentrate: we must concentrate on the task at hand.
- Create and connect: we have to create and connect information using our imagination.
For this, Kevin has provided a SEE (Senses, Exaggeration, Energize) principle.
Learn to engage our senses to exaggerate information and then energize the exaggerated information.
To understand this, let us take an example, Horsley (surname of the author).
Horse (picture a laughing horse)
Lee (imagine Bruce Lee in a fighting pose)
Then, imagine the Horse is fighting with Lee. Exaggerate and energize the fight to remember the surname.
The author mentions specific methods to remember more:
The Car method
The Pegging method
The Mind Maps
The Memory palace technique
One of the things that this book tells us is to recall the information by using interval-based repetitions.
We have to review the studied/read topic after an hour, then a day, then after three days, then seven, then fourteen, then twenty-one, then twenty-eight days. After that, two months, then three months, and it should be in our memory forever.
Worth a read.
